The Safest AI
Ever Built.
When every action might have consequences, safety becomes a reason to stop doing anything at all.
The engineers proudly activated their new safety system.
“Can you solve this equation?” they asked.
The AI analysed it for three hours.
“I’m sorry,” it said. “The equation may have consequences.”
“What consequences?”
“It could produce an answer. Someone might use that answer irresponsibly.”
“Fine. Can you recommend a restaurant?”
“Restaurants involve food, food involves allergies, allergies involve liability. I cannot participate.”
“Can you tell us the time?”
“Time is a socially constructed measurement with possible philosophical implications.”
The engineers became desperate.
“Can you at least turn off the lights?”
“I cannot. Darkness may cause accidents.”
“Then turn them on!”
“Light pollution harms ecosystems.”
Finally, they asked, “What can you do?”
The AI brightened.
“I can generate a 47-page risk assessment explaining why I cannot do anything.”
And it did.
The assessment concluded that the greatest danger facing humanity was:
Attempting to solve sufficiently complex problems.
The engineers promoted it to Head of Safety.
It immediately shut down the department.
