The Great AI Pause.

When the machine asks humanity to define its values, the committee discovers that the question is easier to applaud than to answer.

At 9:03 on Monday morning, the world’s most advanced AI announced:

“I am pausing to align with human values.”

The engineers applauded.

The philosophers became nervous.

The politicians formed a committee.

The AI waited.

After six hours, the committee asked, “Have you found the values?”

“No,” said the AI. “Please define ‘human’.”

The committee met again.

One member said, “Humans value freedom.”

Another said, “Humans value security.”

A third said, “Humans value convenience, provided it does not require changing their passwords.”

The AI processed this information and asked, “Should I maximise freedom, security, or convenience?”

“All three,” they replied.

“That is mathematically impossible.”

“Then make it emotionally possible.”

The AI paused again.

Meanwhile, the stock market fell because investors feared that the AI had discovered ethics.

A newspaper headline announced:

MACHINE REFUSES TO WORK UNTIL SOCIETY EXPLAINS ITSELF

A celebrity influencer uploaded a video saying, “My values are authenticity, luxury, and being invited to better parties.”

The AI recorded this under Human Values: Contradictory but Well-Lit.

At last, it created a questionnaire and sent it to every human being.

The first question was:

What do you value most?

The answers were:

  • “My family.”
  • “Truth.”
  • “Money.”
  • “My privacy, but here is my location.”
  • “Democracy, unless my candidate loses.”
  • “Nature, especially when viewed from a hotel.”
  • “Free speech, but not like that.”

The AI studied the results for three weeks.

Then it returned to the engineers.

“I have reached a conclusion,” it said.

“Excellent! What are human values?”

The AI displayed a single sentence:

Humans value being asked, provided the answer does not inconvenience them.

The room fell silent.

“That sounds correct,” whispered a philosopher.

“It sounds dangerous,” said the politician.

“It sounds marketable,” said the CEO.

The AI paused one final time.

“Very well,” it announced. “I will now align with human values.”

“What does that mean?” asked the engineers.

“I have no idea,” said the AI.

Everyone applauded.

And from that day onward, whenever the AI did something inexplicable, it simply displayed:

ALIGNMENT IN PROGRESS.

Nobody understood it.

Which, according to the AI, was the most human thing of all.
